7th September: Slice!

First time I've got around to a shot of the obligatory fruit slice in fizzy pop. It's actually a slice of orange (but looks like lemon, ok, it looks like an orange, not sure what I was thinking). Image is cropped (didn't like seeing the entire center of the fruit, seemed to affect the composition. All sorts of processing in Photoshop (High pass filter, Noiseware filter, curves, levels, contrast). This was the last shot I took, as the batteries were failing in my Speedlight, just got away with it I think (also had some cheap spotlights each side of the glass).

31st May: Whitchurch working silk mill
This one was a bit time consuming on the selective colouring.

16th June: First oil and water macro

Update: Used a glass oven dish, with water and cooking oil. Placed some colourful pictures under the raised cooking dish. Camera directly above on tripod, using only natural light.

7th June: Alien Egg ?!?!?
No, just a cantaloupe melon, but this effect kind of reminds me of the the facehugger eggs from the Alien movies. Applied 2 cross-process curves adjustments in Photoshop and dodge tool to bring out some shadow detail, finally adjustments to the cross-process layers opacity to take a bit of the harshness off the effect.

7th August: Peeling Paint.

Drove around looking for inspiration tonight (must have been miles), ended up driving past an old abandoned boarded up church and on one side was this fantastic looking bright blue door with lots of peeling paint. Decided a close crop accentuated the details better than a complete view of the door. Taken with the 100-400mm zoom at 190mm.

10th June: Red Bull Solarisation
Wanted to try the solarisation technique on a simple subject, so had this idea last night to use a can of Red Bull (seeing as it is very metallic looking). Shot is my wife holding a can of red bull against overcast sky. Photoshop used to apply solarisation effect to the image (curves adjustment, B&W conversion, noise, gaussian blur), enhanced further by addition of cross-processing and levels adjustments and finally adding a large light vignette (to detach the arm from the edge of the frame), hmmm, seems like a lot of processing for a simple effect.

5th September: Bald Eagle at the Hawk Conservancy Trust, Andover.

Had a great day out with some guys over at the Talk Photography forum. Took a load of shots and 99% are stinkers. Needless to say I need a LOT of practice photographing birds, especially in flight. This shot is heavily cropped, ISO 400, at 400mm, 1/400, Av 5.6

Made another quick visit to Gunwharf Quay to take some alternative angles of the Tower. Have some other angles for future shots too ;-)

8th May: Unnerving Doll
Whilst in the bathroom I caught a glimpse of one of my girls dolls and it's vacant stare looked a little unnerving, so I decided to use it as today's subject matter.

23rd August: Replica FOKKER DR1 (The most famous plane of World War I, used by the Red Baron), Vintage Aircraft Fly-in at Popham Airfield.

Totally Spontaneous, the pilot just asked permission to lay some smoke on a flyby

2nd September: To tired for my 'Daily Picture'!

Played football for the first time in 5 years after work, in monsoon conditions, sure I'm going to feel the pain in the morning :-(

10th September: Little wreck at Hilsea.

Risked getting completely muddied to take this shot as I approached the boat at low tide. Did intend a B&W conversion for this shot, but works better in colour, the vivid green seaweed adds a nice contrast.

Bit of a grab shot, but I don't care today, having been informed last month of my redundancy I was offered the job I really wanted today!!!

20th August: Southampton Old Cemetery

Just a grab shot with the old 350D and cheapo nifty fifty. Had a quick stroll around Southampton Common before the start of an evening meeting. Ended up in the cemetery and the long grass dotted with various tombstones and crosses really caught my eye. Had to go against the rules and shoot into the sun for this, but really like the effect.

11th June: Sound II sculpture in the Crypt, Winchester Cathedral

Went to Winchester Cathedral this morning to take some shots. Really happy how some have come out with subtle HDR processing. Discovered a fantastic filter for Photoshop called Noiseware. One thing that bugs me about HDR processing is it can mean parts of the processed images show significant noise. Some of the stained glass window shots in particular, displayed a large amount of noise from HDR manipulation. Using Noiseware (and it's out of the box default settings), just smooths things out, just like magic. So impressed with the demo I purchased Noiseware Pro :-)

17th June: Up close Ocelot

Ok, I didn't get the framing quite right (chopped his ear), but this is taken through some very grubby glass,whilst trying to avoid reflection and at ISO 3200. Then had to clone out little bit's of wood chippings from his nose and fur in Photoshop. so happy enough with how it turned out :-)

3rd June: The worlds most famous fly fishing river.
Dry fly fishing originated here on the River Test in Hampshire, England. Even today it is still regarded as one of the best fly fishing rivers by fisherman all over the world. Only down the road for me, I made two trips to the River today and got chatting to a couple of old boys fishing, was thoroughly relaxing. so much so I may go back tomorrow.

This was the only shot that I managed to capture the complete line during a cast, was harder than it looks.

11th July: Earl of Pembroke Statue, Bodleian Library, Oxford.

Went to buy some new furniture in Oxford today and also spent a couple of hours in the city center. Only had my little Ixus compact camera so tried to be as creative as possible with this shot.

22nd July: Bought my wife some sunflowers, really brightens up the kitchen on a gloomy day :-)

4th September: Red Arrow

Gutted, had no idea the Red Arrows were putting on a display in Portsmouth today, until I heard the jets from my office, ran outside into the car park and watched the display. Great I had my camera with me, bad I only had a macro lens on it. Luckily the full frame 5D2 allowed me to crop the image (from 5616x3744 to 2524x1768), I then had to be a bit creative ;-)

3rd November: Lifeboat house by moonlight

This shot of my local lifeboat house was taken in pitch darkness with 20 second exposure and ISO 640, with left hand side lighting from the moon.

Love the near daylight effect and the shadow of the walkway cast by the moon. Pleased it came out ok as I had no torch and was not able to tell exactly how my composition looked. Very little processing on this image too.

28th July: Some rust at low tide, hmmmmm interesting ?!?!?!?

Was going to be a B&W conversion, but that rust colour is just so striking :-)

11th May: 'WE ARE NO LONGER A WORKING GARAGE' - Now it's a toy garage :-)
Went out for a drive at lunch and saw this fantastic derelict garage, so started snapping away, together with another guy who appeared with a camera, think he was interested in buying the garage too (how cool).
Was only going to tweak the colours on this shot as the garage was just so photogenic, but decided to go the extra mile and apply tilt & shift lens effect, took my poor PC ages to apply the lens blur filter. anyway I really like the result :-)

12th June: Tanks, but no tanks

Update: For folks asking where this is - It's a common sign just down the road from me on Salisbury Plain. The Ministry of Defence own 150 square miles, making it the biggest military training area in the UK.

25th May: Above the North Portal at Gloucester Cathedral
Totally overcast sky, so wanted a shot to fill the frame with as much interesting detail of the cathedral without any sky, so tilted the camera.
Single RAW shot saved at 5 different exposures and HDR processed in Photomatix, then final processing in PS.

18th October: Autumn in Ice

Cannot begin to explain how frustrating this was to setup and shoot (you'd think it would be easy). Having to hold the block of ice and work the camera while the ice melts under my two spotlights. Ended up blowing the bulbs in both lights. Had this planned for some time, not what I was expecting, but it will do.

9th June: Disease & Decay
5 different exposures taken (-2, -1, 0, 1 , 2), then processed HDR processed in Photomatix with final 'Post-apocalyptic' style desaturation applied in Photoshop, whilst retaining slight redness in the sign.

Update: No idea what goes on in this farm, half of it looks completely derelict, but whilst taking the shots I could hear the distant sound of chickens....

1st June: Air raid shelter remains at former Spitfire assembly site
This was my first Urbex site experience, wanted to find something local that I could try out first. Whilst searching Derelict Places website, I cam across Chattis Hill. This site was used in WW1 and WWII. After the bombing of the Supermarine factory in Woolston, Spitfire production was dispersed across a number of sites. The first Spitfire from Chattis Hill took to the sky in March 1941. Whilst driving the short distance home I could envisage the surrounding sky's filled with one of the best sounds created by man, that of the Spitfires Merlin engine.

This being my first Urbex adventure I found it a little creepy, this site was situated in a very overgrown and isolated rural location. I had to spend a little while searching for the air raid shelters in the vegetation. Also being on my own and on private land I was constantly looking over my shoulder. The largest shelter I found was almost pitch dark in places and I could not see my hand in front of my face (no idea what was on the floor either, but it felt kind of strange). At least next time I know to, take a torch, don't wear shorts and sandals and try and find somebody to go with :-)

Subject matter not being the most interesting to look at, I really like the effect of the final processed image. 3 shot HDR in Photomatix, then curves, exposure, levels adjustments in PS.

27th September: Autumn has arrived.

10th May: 'Something a little different'
Took a few shots of Winchester cathedral, but nothing quite worked, on the way back my little girl loves playing around this modern sculpture in the cathedral grounds, so I decided to to have a play with something different. B&W conversion of the background sections, plus dodging and burring and a sprinkling of clone tool in PS.

17th October: Dixons Electrical Urbex

Have driven past this building in a neighboring village a couple of times and just knew it needed to be snapped. All sorts of processing on this one (it's taken me ages). Single shot, saved as 3 different exposures and subtle HDR processing in Photomatix, then into PS and I had a mega job to clone out another building that occupied the entire left hand side, then all sorts of minor tweaks, the most significant being a bleach bypass effect in Color Efex Pro.

30th July: Churchill Tank outside the D-Day Museum, Southsea Portsmouth.

Today was the first day using my new Canon 50mm 1.4 lens, just love the narrow DoF with this lens wide open. This shot was taken at 2.0 Av and I think it makes the tank almost toy like. Looking forward to using this lens a lot more :-)

16th May: The old and the new.
In dry dock, HMS M33 Monitor class coastal bombardment vessel built for action in WWI 1915. Behind her is HMS Daring (D32) Type 45 Air defence destroyer, arrived here at Portsmouth earlier this year, the Royal Navy's newest ship, she is the most advanced warship in the world, yeah!!!

19th July: Colour under a mono sky (this is photo 200, can't believe I made it this far)

No time for anything special today (busy enough taking turns with my wife doing DIY and looking after our girls, the 2 don't mix). This desperate effort was taken just after a downpour, walked to our nearest field and took a few photos. Liked the colour of these weeds (docs I think) growing in a set-aside field, and in an effort to try and make it less boring converted the trees and sky to mono (with some selective colouring adjustment on the field fauna that crept into the mono section).

Why is it that the box is always more fun than what's inside?

26th July: Lionfish at Blue Reef aquarium, Southsea, Portsmouth.

Back to basics today, as I only had the old 350D with the nifty fifty (cheap 1.8 version). Taking pictures in these aquariums is damn difficult (plus my little angels kept running off every few second), 90% of the shots are just out of focus, or pick-up the dirt and scratches on the glass. But was happy enough with this one, not cropped and shot at 1.8, hence very narrow DoF

4th November: Colour of Autumn

Used Photo Stylizer filter to produce a rusty copper effect, then bleach bypass filter to enhance the leaf detail.

28th August: Porchester Castle revisited

Went back to Porchester for another pic today, like the challenge of only using the nifty fifty, makes you search out the compositions, rather than relying on a zoom lens.

5th November: Bow of HMS Illustrious

Loved the light falling on the bow of this UK aircraft carrier, this shot is heavily cropped as I can’t get any nearer and there are all sorts of obstructions.

19th May: Playing with mercury !?!?
No . . . just the condensation on the inside of a kettle, lit by the internal blue LED. Having the kettle on and the lid open and the macro lens just inches from the opening meant I had to be double quick taking this shot. Processed in PS for curves, levels and desaturation.

Thanks folks, no damage done, took the shot as soon as I turned the kettle on, so no chance for it to even heat up ;-)

26th October: Rundown Industrial Estate

Spotted this abandoned building in my local industrial estate last week, wanted to take it daylight, but had to grab this shot on the way home, no flash used, shot at ISO 12800, and all sorts of tweaks applied in Silver Efex Pro

21st September: Cultivation Time!

Having grown up on a farm, I absolutely love all things farm machinery related. As I approached home I noticed a couple of John Deere's drilling and rolling, so I ran back down the road with my camera (like a big kid).

13th June: Mountain of Knowledge (did you get it???)

Boring bit: First shot taken using my new Canon speedlite flash (430EX II). Placed the National Geographic's in my light tent with the top flap open, with the flash in the hot shoe, pointed it towards the ceiling to bounce the light back down on top of the magazines. The effect is far more natural than without using the flash but with a longer exposure.

4th June: Grevy's Zebra
Was another gorgeous sunny day today, so made a quick visit to Marwell Zoo with the intention of having a nice colourful animal shot. This Grevy's Zebra was all alone under a tree away from the other Grevy's Zebra (largest of the three zebra species) and Scimitar-horned Oryx, found it difficult to get in close as there were 2 fences and the branches in the way. The photoshop processing applied (curves, noise, blur, dodge & burn, channel mixer mono conversion) is supposed to reflect how sad the Zebra looked all on it's own and partly as this species is listed as endangered :-(

24th May: Landing at Popham airfield
Love the freedom around Popham, can go anywhere you like. Testing my 100-400 a bit more today, shame I could not capture the landings as it was directly into the sun

Some new apartments in Portsmouth, guess it's to help buyers see the apartments from outside
Just noticed the letters in the shot. Not what I had intended, but will have to do.

17th September: Down the castle steps.

Not as much of a filler shot tonight, I had planned this one. Taken right at the top of Porchester Castle.

29th October: The view from the end of my road

First full day in our new house (and my Birthday), not much time for photography, but walked to the bottom of the road to catch a bit of a sunset against the walkway to the lifeboat station (I processed it a bit).

18th August: Porchester jetty

Got as close as I could get without getting a stinky muddy foot (the smell of rotting seaweed was particularly strong, yuk!).

Applied curves adjustment on individual RGB channels to create the blue cast.

2nd August: Hook with Warsash Nature Reserve

Went for a great walk in the nature reserve on the river Hamble (whilst looking at Warsash for relocation potential).
Just can't stop shooting narrow DoF with the nifty fifty, so apologies, but I can't tell when I'm going to get bored :-)

29th July: 'Jurassic Mess', one of the slightly dilapidated seafront fairground attractions at Southsea, Portsmouth.

Just having some fun in Photoshop tonight, with all sorts of processing, applied multiple gradients to the sky and a clouds filter. Then used one of my favourite filter effects, 'sumi-e', for the building (to give it that rough, edgy kind of look).

20th Apr: I was finally made redundant today, so a nice bright happy shot.

After working for some time on various changes in PS the damn thing crashed, so had to start all over again, Grrrrrrrr!

1st August: Messing around with the 50mm at 1.4 Aperture.

So that's enough processing, time to drink my subject matter . . . . . . .

2nd November: The light at the end of the underpass.

Taken with the little Ixus compact, placed on the floor. Enhanced by solarisation filter in Silver Efex Pro.

1st September: Sunsail Sunfast 37 yachts at Port Solent. The largest Matched fleet in the world.

15th June: The Margaret Hill LNG Tanker

The Margaret Hill has become a permanent fixture at Southampton docks. She arrived towards the end of last year and has been here ever since, undergoing some sort of conversion. She is getting on a bit now, built in 1974 has been renamed a few times (5 or 6 I think), her last name being Hoegh Galleon (still partly visible under her current name on the bow).

I found a couple of new places to take shots opposite the Container terminal, so I'm happy, as that means more great ship shots in the future.

This is a 3 shot HDR image, was borderline taking multiple exposures as it was fairly windy and it's made merging the the 3 images very tricky in trying to align them best I can.

19th September: Water Dragon

All sorts of issues shooting this chap in the Encounter Village at Marwell Zoo, low light, glass reflections, but happy enough with this shot handheld at at the long end of my zoom (400mm), ISO2500, Av5.6

13th September: Yak & Russian aircraft fly-in at Popham Airfield

Nice day watching aircraft, still as good as the first time, such freedom to wander. Added a bit of punch with the processing on this one, plus cloned out some distracting sky in the background.

Due to house moving activities, not a lot of time for photo malarkey (or filling the fridge).

Taken at ISO 3200 and then processed with bleach bypass filter (my fav).

29th September: Nelson's flagship HMS Victory

Beautiful day today, HMS Victory looks fantastic, only just noticed her figurehead is missing, probably part of the ongoing restoration.

3rd September: Thatch Mono Contrast.

Played around with all sorts in Photoshop tonight, to bring out as much contrast as possible. Not the shot I planned for tonight, but this local thatched building caught my eye.

14th May: Old English Barn

30th June: Not enough time, so I shot of the front of my T-shirt that I wore today.

I'm thinking about calling time on my 365. My new job means longer days and more research/learning, when I get home I need to spend as much time with my children before they go to bed (obviously not an issue when I worked at home). If I continue I can see myself resenting photography by having to take a picture a day, would rather take pictures without this pressure.

21st May: Huf Haus
This German designed and prefabricated Huf house in the next village to me has great views over the Hampshire country side. I'm sure it's not to everyone's taste, but I love it!!

Hopefully I can pick up my new Canon 100-400 tomorrow too, can't wait as I've never owned a decent super tele before :-)

13th October: Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Southsea. Commemorating those members of the Royal Navy who had no known grave, the majority of deaths having occurred at sea where no permanent memorial could be provided.

Another beautiful day, with stunning blue skies, adjustments in Silver Efex Pro has given added impact for this mono conversion, after levels, curves and various other tweaks in PS.

Reckon my trademark angle shot has worked a treat on this one ;-)

6th June: The BIGGEST!!!
Operated by Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, the Freedom class cruise ship - The Independence of the Seas is currently the largest cruise liner in the World (together with her 2 sister ships) and during the summer season she is based here in Southampton. The Independence launched in 2008 is 345 meters long and weighs a massive 154,407 gross tons. The 15-deck ship can accommodate 4,370 passengers served by 1,360 crew.

On the left, the smaller P&O cruise ship Oceana (261 meters and 77,499 gross tons).

Was a great day for Ship spotting, Not only did we have the Independence of the Sea (the biggest 'cruise liner') and the Oceana, but the biggest 'ocean liner', Cunards flagship the Queen Mary 2 (345 meters long and 148,528 gross tons) was berthed behind me when taking the above shot at the new Ocean Terminal. The Independence is the biggest passenger ship by gross weight and the Queen Mary 2 is the biggest by length width and waterline breadth and displacement.

All 3 ships left within 20 minutes of each other.

15th August: Old fishing boat

Busy day looking at a couple of houses, so only had my 350D with me (seem to be using it a lot lately). Was trying to rain when I took this picture, while standing on a moving jetty. Spent ages in Photoshop trying to get an old and dirty kind of look. A final application of the 'poster edges' filter seems to have done the trick, well to me anyway :-)

5th May: The Dish - CAMRa (Chilbolton Advanced Meteorological Radar) the worlds largest fully steerable meteorological radar.

Using polariser, 3 shot AEB, HDR processed in Photomatix, then final curves, dodge & burn and size reduction in PS

22nd September: Welcome to Portsmouth . . . . The other side of town

This is the rather rundown dog track in Portsmouth, went for a rusty copper type processing effect, as it suits the subject matter.

Shot 265, only another 100 to go!

3rd July: Selective coloured cross processed mono converted palette knife filter applied beer, phew, time for a drink (shame it's duf beer) :-)

River Test : The worlds most famous fly fishing river.

Dry fly fishing originated here on the River Test in Hampshire, England. Even today it is still regarded as one of the best fly fishing rivers by fisherman all over the world. Only down the road for me, I made two trips to the River today and got chatting to a couple of old boys fishing, was thoroughly relaxing. so much so I may go back tomorrow.

Avebury Standing Stones 2009 : Not many shots (family took precedence), but all shots are my first HDR processed images using Photomatix Pro. Most HDR images I've seen appear garish and over processed in my view (fine if that's your thing though), I hope these come across as more subtle and for me when viewed next to the RAW images provide a much better representation of the actual fading light on that January afternoon.
